Mechanical Plant Decommissioning – The Savoy Hotel

Brief Description

Scope of work

  • Hand dismantling of:
    • x4 30-tonne standby generators
    • x4 60-tonne boilers
  • Segmentation of plant into manageable sections weighing between 1–3 tonnes
  • Design, installation, testing and certification of a bespoke hoist and beam system
  • Controlled lifting and removal of plant sections from the basement
  • Environmental jet washing of basement areas using specialist cleansing detergents
  • Removal of waste and liquids via vacuum tankers positioned approximately 30 metres from the work area

Key Challenges

  • Extremely confined working environment
  • Restricted access routes within a live, high-profile hotel setting
  • Complex logistics associated with removing large-scale plant in sections
  • Requirement for rigorous safety controls and certified lifting solutions

Outcome:

All generators and boilers were safely dismantled and removed without incident, despite the challenging conditions and restricted access. Following  completion of the removal works, the basement areas were thoroughly cleaned and prepared, allowing refurbishment works to proceed in line with the hotel’s future operational requirements.

This project highlights KpH Environmental’s capability to deliver complex heavy plant removal projects within sensitive, high-value environments while maintaining the highest standards of safety, planning and execution.
