Brief Description

KpH Environmental was awarded the contract to complete the strip-out of two large rooftop plant rooms at Selfridges, London.The works focused on the decommissioning and removal of major plant equipment, including steam generators, boilers and all associated pipework, within a live retail environment.

Scope of work

Decommissioning and removal of six large steam generators
Removal of two 4-tonne boilers and two 2-tonne boilers
Strip-out of all associated pipework within both plant rooms
Controlled hot works using plasma cutting and conventional cutting techniques
Sectioning of plant equipment to enable safe handling and removal

Key Challenges

Rooftop working environment above a live department store
Significant plant weights requiring controlled dismantling
Thick steel construction on larger boilers requiring alternative cutting methods
Long travel distances for waste removal within the building

Logistics & Access

Due to the volume and weight of waste, logistics were critical to the success of the project. Scaffold gantries and hoists were installed to assist with heavy waste removal.

A dedicated night-shift waste removal team worked continuously throughout the programme to ensure progress was maintained and disruption to store operations was minimised. All waste movements were carried out with care to prevent damage to the building fabric.

Outcome:

The rooftop plant rooms were successfully stripped out, with all redundant plant and pipework safely removed. The project was delivered efficiently, with careful planning and execution ensuring minimal impact on the live retail environment.
